French, a junior Journalism student at High Point University, had her 30th article published on the website Pink and Black last week.
P&B is a site aimed at young adult women ages 18 to 25. It covers topics ranging from college life to career advice to fashion. French started writing for the website in January 2013 as a college beat writer, and has since gone on to write for all sections of the site. She is honored to be able to say that she will now have about 50 total published articles.
“As a college student about to enter the working world, I’m extremely proud and excited to have such an extensive portfolio,” French said. “I love writing for P&B, and I hope to continue writing for the site for a long time.”
In a time where computers and tablets are replacing physical newspapers and magazines, online writing is soaring in popularity, with websites such as Elite Daily, Thought Catalog and Pink & Black taking over the reading industry and news sites replacing hard copy newspapers.
“There’s nothing I like more than being able to hold a physical magazine or newspaper in my hands, but that’s not the future anymore,” French said. “The future of journalism is online, and I’m glad that I’m getting a head start.”
French has also written for the HPU student newspaper the Campus Chronicle, the High Point University website as a student blogger, and has had a byline in Scholastic Parent & Child magazine.
Once she graduates from HPU, French hopes to pursue a career in magazine journalism. This summer, she hopes to intern at one of New York City’s many lifestyle magazines and gain even more clips and experience.
French hopes that she can show fellow students that it is possible to advance your career while still in school.
"Just a little bit of extra work each week can drastically increase your portfolio," French said "and I'm glad that I found this opportunity to hone my writing skills before I enter the real world."
