Southern Roots: A Modern Taste of the South
By Olivia French
Nestled
in the heart of NC’s tiny town of Jamestown, Southern Roots Restaurant &
Catering is the epitome of what a small local restaurant should be.
Good
food, an incredible atmosphere and an attentive staff help to take Southern
Roots from being just another local hole-in-the-wall to a favorite of both
locals and visitors alike.
Though
it’s not much to look at from the front, the inside of Southern Roots is an
eclectic shabby-chic masterpiece.
Burlap curtains,
scuffed concrete floors and cozy booths laden with throw pillows help maintain
the vibe while keeping guests comfortable and feeling as if they’ve been
brought into a southern home with a modern twist.
The back porch offers a romantic patio featuring
a fireplace, lit up trees and wrought-iron tables and chairs for guests to dine
on during the warmer months.
Upon
arrival, there is live music near the hostess stand, which provides
entertainment during the inevitable wait for a table. We only had to wait for
ten minutes in one of the comfy couches provided facing the bar before we were
seated at a corner booth.
The
menu focuses on southern classics with a modern twist. House smoked pulled
pork, fried green tomatoes and warm Gouda pimento cheese are just a few of the
delicious offerings available. There is also a daily specials menu, which
features a few entrees of the day as well as wine pairing suggestions.
I
ordered the grilled chicken panini with sweet potato fries, and my date decided
on the pulled pork plate, which comes with house made coleslaw and two sides of
your choice. After much deliberation, he finally decided on the potato mash and
spinach and garlic.
Our order came quickly, despite the
fact that the restaurant was completely packed.
The panini was
served on thick warm bread and was perfectly toasted. Grilled chicken, fresh
mozzarella, roasted roma tomatoes and basil pesto oozed out of the sides, but I
didn’t even mind the slight mess because it was so delicious. The sweet potato
fries were crispy, hot and had just enough salt to make them the perfect
companion to the sandwich.
The
real show stopper, however, was the pulled pork plate. A mountain of saucy
pulled pork, tangy and perfectly cooked, was accompanied by the creamiest
mashed potatoes I’ve ever tasted, and the spinach featured a nice garlic kick
to provide some relief from the richness of the rest of the meal.
Our
waiter was caring and attentive, and stopped by our table several times to make
sure that we had enough water and to see if we needed anything else. The owner
also stopped by our table to chat for a few minutes, and was genuine and warm
and seemed to genuinely care about not only his restaurant, but his customers
as well.
Though
the dining area did get a little loud as the restaurant became more crowded, it
did not hinder conversation.
If
you’re looking for a cozy place for date night, girl’s night out or even just
for a nice lunch or dinner, Southern Roots is definitely the place to go.
